My Writing or Artwork

On this page I'll write reviews of the music I listen to and books I read.

All about music

My favorite kind of music is metal. I love Scorpions and Metallica the most. There are a lot of other bands that I like, like Disturbed, Staind, Def Leppard, Rage Against the Machine, and Breaking Benjamin. My favorite song of all time is Metallica's Unforgiven. It's the best song ever.

Chevelle
I recently found out about Chevelle and turns out they're not bad. The very first song I listened to was Vitamin R, on the radio and liked it. Then I heard some other songs, like The Red, Send the Pain Below and Closure and they're good. And I just found out that they're all brothers, Joe, Pete, and Sam Loeffler. Their music sounds very passionate and powerful, and those two things are very important.

Depeche Mode or Marylin Manson
I used to think that Depeche Mode was an okay band. I never liked them but I did respect them. So when I found out that Marylin Manson's(!) Personal Jesus(!) was actually a cover of Depeche Mode's song, I just assumed that Marylin Manson murdered someone's nice song yet another time (this taking from the time I heard him do a cover of Sweet Dreams). So today I figured I might listen to the original Personal Jesus performed by Depeche Mode and it turned out to be horrible! But let's review the basic facts first: Marylin Manson had no right to sing something titled Personal Jesus in the first place. Would that make him a total hypocrite? Well, you should see the video first. But then again, maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I have no right to judge or talk about anything without getting all the facts straight. I think that the song is very nice and another, very talented nice band should take it and make a very nice cover of it. It's like the song Hurt from NIN, a great song just not performed well.

Growing Out of Music

Here's a disturbing thing I noticed a while ago. While being a member of iVillage and gURl.com, I post on the message boards. The members of iVillage are mostly women and the members of gURL are teenage girls and here's what I've noticed about the message boards: few people post on the music board of iVillage, while the music board of gURL is the most active. Which confirms the fact that as people grow older, they stop being serious about music. How many adults do you know who listen to music all day long and would rather listen to music than do anything else? I don't want to be one of those adults when I grow up. What if one day I wake up and not feel the need to listen to music to make my life complete? Or worse, discover that I'd rather listen to Celine Dion than, let's say, Tool? That thought really scares me.

Lyrics for Quicksand Jesus by Skid Row

(Rachel Bolan, Dave "The Snake" Sabo)
Album: Slave to the Grind

She caught the melting sky
It burned but still the winter passes by and by, to the other side
A slow parade of winds that blows through trees that wilted
With the season's children
Are we saved by the words of bastard saints
Do we live in fear or faith
Tell me now who's behind the rain

A tangled maze of grace
The symptoms of "for real" are crumbling from embrace
But still we chace
The shadows of belief, a new religion clouds our visions of the roots of our souls
Are we ashamed of our own faith
Or play the fool for our own sake
Tell me who's behind the rain

What do we want, where do we go
When we get where we don't know
Why should we doubt the virgin white of fallen snow
When faith's our shelter from the cold.

Quicksand Jesus I'm so far away without you
Quicksand Jesus I'm so far away without you
Quicksand Jesus I'm so far away
Quicksand Jesus I'm so far away

Quicksand Jesus I need you
Quicksand Jesus I believe you
Quicksand Jesus I'm so far away

Nymphetamine (Fix) by Cradle of Filth

I'm seriously addicted to this song. It's amazing. I listen to it all the time and I don't feel like listening to anything else. I'm not a fan of the band mainly because this is the only song from them that I heard. They're metal band, black metal, I think. The lyrics are amazing. They're a little hard to understand, but you don't have to always understand the song thouroughly in order to appreciate it. I like songs that seem way over my head. Someone wrote those lyrics and at that time they made perfect sense to him. And every time you listen to the song you discover more things about it. That way it never stops being interesting.
Well, if you're one of those people who has only several favorite bands and listens only to them all the time, you should probably check out this song, for the sake of listening to something new.

Book Reviews

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Book Cover

I read this book several weeks ago and it was amazing. I had to write a book report on it for school and I really enjoyed it. The book is about this girl who's very different from the others. It's a very inspirational book and it changed me a lot. I would recommend it to everyone.

Cut by Patricia McCormick

Book Cover

The most beautifully written book I've ever read and that's the reason you owe it to yourself to check out this book. It will draw you in until you finish the very last chapter. But when it comes to the plot... I didn't like the whole plot of the book because it seemed like it lacked something. Surprising plot twists, some shocking element... The book seemd more like non-fiction, or a memoir, focusing more on the feelings than on the story. Nevertheless, I really loved the book and I know that the majority of girls have already read it. So if you didn't, you better go to the library or the bookstore and get the book. You won't regret reading it.

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess

Book Cover

This book is the best thing that happened to literature. It's amazing. It's about this 15-year-old criminal, Alex, whose greatest joy in life is to make people suffer. Then many interesting things happen to him; I don't want to give away important details from the book just in case you decide to read it. It's very well-written. You will laugh, you will gasp in horror, you will love the characters while hating them. Well, you will mostly dislike them because most of the characters are evil. Read it and you will understand what I'm talking about. The only problem with the book is that there are a lot of Russian words in it that slows you down a bit but it's not impossible to understand the meanings of the words even if you don't know Russian.

The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier

Book Cover

Robert Cormier is my most favorite writer and I read most of his books. The Chocolate War is not his best work, but nevertheless, it's very good. If, instead of cheesy romance novels, you'd rather read about corrupt priests, secret parochial school clubs and a chocolate fundraiser gone horribly awry, then you should definitely read The Chocolate War. Like all the other Robert Cormier books, it's very controversial. That's why I like Robert Cormier so much.
If you read it and like it, then you should read the sequel, Beyond the Chocolate War. It's the continuation of the book and just as interesting.

There's also a movie of Chocolate War. I haven't seen it, but maybe some people would prefer watching the movie instead of reading the book. So check it out if you're curious.

IMDB; cast, character, reviews, and other useful info

A very nice summary of the book
